Depression and Borderline Personality

Jean Bergeret (1923–2016) was a prominent French academic, physician, and psychoanalyst. He began his life by taking part in the Christian Resistance during the Second World War, then specialized in pediatrics before turning to psychoanalysis, and became one of the founders of the French Psychoanalytic Association.

He became known for his research on the “normal personality,” depression and borderline states, and on fundamental violence, emphasizing the need to understand the deep psychic dynamics of individuals, while criticizing Freud’s notion of death instincts and his view of anger.

He contributed to developing a deeper understanding of the relations between sexual and psychic drives, psychological defenses, and behavioral disorders. His works are still considered essential references for specialists.
